Audubon Park Arboretum
The Audubon Park Arboretum consists of 33 acres of wooded park land, with a one-mile walking trail, as well as two pavilions and a playground. There are roughly 500 trees in the park. Predominantly large oaks, with hickory nuts, hackberries, elms, cherry laurels, sycamores, and other species scattered throughout. In 2023 approximately 30 young understory trees were planted – including service berries, dogwoods, redbuds, crabapple, and hollies. A natural habitat area is also under development, with native trees and wildflowers.
The Friends of Audubon Park community group created the arboretum to preserve the park trees and to ensure the shady, welcoming green space was available for the community. Educational and tree appreciation activities are on-going. Other groups instrumental in creating the arboretum include Memphis Parks, Memphis City Beautiful, Bloom 901, Memphis Botanic Garden, and the West Tennessee Chapter of TN Urban Forestry Council.
