Carol Woods
Carol Woods Retirement Community is a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) founded in 1979 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It sits on approximately 130 acres of beautiful and diverse land, with an estimated 65% canopy coverage. Carol Woods is the proud steward of 5 individual oaks that are over 200 years old, dense pine forests, mature hardwood species, specimen trees, and exotic ornamentals.
Upholding a commitment to sustainability, Carol Woods staff enhance the property with a diversity of landscapes--planting natives and pollinators and removing invasive plants. The team is decreasing turf grass where appropriate and embracing a “leave the leaves” philosophy to act as a natural mulch, provide habitat for wildlife and pollinators, improve soil health as well as reduce dumpster usage. Staff use Carol Woods’ natural features for storm water management to a maximum extent, and they are transitioning to the use of electric equipment (61% of turf-related equipment already in use) whenever possible. Carol Woods is devoted to preserving our distinctive natural habitat for years to come.
