The College of DuPage Arboretum in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is a living learning landscape woven throughout the college’s main and west campus grounds. A 2019 tree inventory documented 3,233 trees representing 44 genera and 94 different species, reflecting a broad and educationally valuable campus tree collection. The arboretum includes trees in high-traffic academic areas, parking lots, campus greens, pond landscapes, athletic areas, and other campus spaces, with notable concentrations around Reda Pond, the McAninch Arts Center lawn, the Health and Science Center, and the west campus landscape areas.

The collection includes many species of interest, such as bur oak, swamp white oak, chinkapin oak, paperbark maple, pond cypress, Persian ironwood, dawn redwood, blue ash, Alaska cedar, sweetgum, Kentucky coffeetree, ginkgo, katsura tree, yellowwood, black tupelo, baldcypress, and several magnolia, dogwood, hornbeam, pine, spruce, linden, and serviceberry species. The inventory also identifies several “Campus Trees of Distinction,” including blue ash, Alaska cedar, sweetgum, pond cypress, Persian ironwood, bur oak, chinkapin oak, black walnut, and a grouping of paperbark maples.

In addition to the broader campus tree canopy, the College of DuPage Horticulture Department maintains an orchard with several fruit trees, as well as an outdoor landscape laboratory that includes a diverse group of woody plants for students to study. These spaces support hands-on education in plant identification, landscape management, arboriculture, horticulture, and sustainable campus stewardship. Together, the arboretum, orchard, and landscape lab provide students and visitors with direct access to a wide range of trees and shrubs used in designed landscapes and urban environments.
