Covenant Living of Keene Arboretum

Description

The Covenant Living of Keene Arboretum is situated on the 65-acre campus of our senior living community. The property encompasses a diverse natural landscape that includes wooded uplands, open fields, wetlands fringed by a beaver dam and pond, and a wooded lowland area. A network of hiking trails winds through the campus and extends onto neighboring lands, thanks to the generosity of abutting landowners who welcome resident hikers.

Many of the woodland’s existing native trees have been identified and labeled, including grey alder, nannyberry, serviceberry, beaked hazelnut, witch-hazel, and several common upland species. Cultivated garden areas feature ginkgo, river birch, Japanese red-leaf maple, Kousa dogwoods, and Yoshino cherry.

Residents planted a wide range of seedlings over recent years. These include maples, black walnut, hazelnut, black oak, tupelo, tamarack, sycamore, Kentucky coffee tree, disease-resistant chestnuts, and four pawpaw trees.

During the winter of 2025, residents identified 13 additional tree species for inclusion and sponsored 2.5-inch-caliper specimens. These trees were planted in the fall and include yellowwood, sweetgum, white oak, sassafras, hophornbeam, little leaf linden, shagbark hickory, hawthorn, redbud, and a disease-resistant American elm. In the lowland meadow, additional plantings feature bur oak, red horse chestnut, and tulip tree.

The resulting collection represents a combination of native, adaptive, and ornamental species reflecting the ecological diversity of the region and the educational mission of the arboretum.
