Douglas County Fairgrounds Arboretum
Douglas County Fairgrounds Arboretum
Originally the site was a farmstead established in 1870 along the historic Oregon Trail in rural Douglas County. In 1951 the farmland including a small stone farmhouse was purchased from Judge Hugh Means at below market value for the youth of the community as a 4-H fairgrounds. The property has been the site for the Douglas County Fair for over 65 years.
The arboretum includes over 50 species among more than 230 trees. This collection enhances the horticultural education opportunities for county residents as well as visitors by showcasing native and non-native tree specimens which thrive in northeast Kansas. The growing tree collection and demonstration gardens provide educational opportunities for school groups, community groups, gardeners, homeowners, and recreational enthusiasts.
