Downtown Arboretum of Maynard, MA

The Downtown Arboretum of Maynard is a community-based and volunteer-managed arboretum adorning the town’s public street scapes, civic spaces, and nearby municipal properties. Supported collaboratively by the Maynard Tree Committee, Maynard Tree Corps, and the Town of Maynard, their arboretum functions as both an urban forest and a living classroom. Its mission is to enhance ecological health while fostering environmental education and stewardship among residents, visitors, and local businesses. Through intentional tree planting, care, and public engagement, the arboretum strengthens Maynard’s sense of place while delivering tangible benefits such as improved air quality and reduced heat-island effects, and bringing a new level of aesthetics to a dense, mill-centered landscape. In total, our Downtown Arboretum furnishes a more welcoming downtown environment.

The arboretum emphasizes a diverse collection of primarily native tree species from the eastern United States, selected to support local wildlife and improve long-term resilience to pests, disease, and climate change. Some of the plantings are bold. Trees such as American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) and Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) are not typically planted in settings like Maynard’s. Educational tree tags and interpretive signage help visitors learn about species identification, ecological relationships, and the value of city trees. As the arboretum grows, planned expansions into adjacent neighborhoods and the development of self-guided arboretum trails will showcase additional species that are less compatible with densely built environments, broadening biodiversity while improving public access. This distributed, walkable model reflects Maynard’s commitment to sustainability, community involvement, and inclusive access to green infrastructure.
