Evergreen Cemetery
Evergreen Cemetery
Located in America’s largest national forest and in Alaska’s capital, Evergreen Cemetery is rich in local history is the final resting place of many prominent Alaskans. It became active in 1891 and was deeded to the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) in 1907. The CBJ’s Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains the cemetery today. Situated as it is near the heart of our city and near residential neighborhoods and schools, Evergreen Cemetery is highly accessible. It provides the venue for quiet reflection and remembrance of loved ones and ancestors that is so important in a cemetery space, but is often enjoyed as a park setting. The cemetery is a busy biking and walking commute route, and a beautiful, peaceful, and accessible spot for outdoor education in natural science, history, art, and social studies. It is used for sledding, fly-casting classes, museum tours, Juneau Garden Club tours, picnicking, and tree climbing. The Juneau Urban Forestry Partnership and the Juneau Garden Club have made Evergreen Cemetery the location of Alaska Arbor Day tree planting festivities for many years, helping to make it a diverse and interesting landscape while teaching our young people about the value of trees.
We acknowledge that Evergreen Cemetery is located on Lingit Aani, and wish to honor the people of this land, the Auk Kwaan and Taku Kwaan. For more than ten thousand years, Alaska Native People have been and continue to be integral to the well-being of our community. We are grateful to be in this place, a part of this community, and to honor the culture, traditions, and resilience of the Lingit people. Gunalcheésh!
