Ferncliff Cemetery, established in 1902, has long been a place of respect and repose for the deceased and a place of remembrance and respite for the living. This non-sectarian cemetery, located in Hartsdale, NY, offers expansive interment and memorialization options within a garden-like setting. Of particular note are the three community mausoleums – stately buildings with indoor niches for both full-body and cremation interments, set with jewel-colored stained glass windows and nestled among mature trees. With its roots as an historic garden cemetery, Ferncliff has a vested interest in maintaining verdant grounds that welcome in mourners and the broader community alike. Arboretum certification helps to codify the cemetery’s commitment to proactive tree care which will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the grounds; improve tree condition, health, and longevity; and decrease storm damage while increasing public safety.
Although Ferncliff is just beginning its journey as an accredited arboretum, there are several trees of particular note present on the grounds. A massive and ancient white oak stands sentinel on a corner near the oldest community mausoleum, Ferncliff Mausoleum – also known as the Cathedral of Memories. A similarly massive American sycamore holds court along the road frontage of the cemetery, providing beauty and shade to Secor Road as well as the cemetery grounds. While still young, keep your eyes on the towering dawn redwood near Rosewood Mausoleum – this species can grow over 100 feet tall! The cemetery and arboretum grounds are open for self-guided tree walks from 9 AM to 4 PM most days. Planned events on the grounds include Arbor Day tree planting, guided tours with focus on both the trees and the notable people interred in the cemetery, and arboricultural workshops.
