Historic Rosedale - Mellichamp Arboretum

Description

The Dr. Larry Mellichamp Memorial Arboretum at Historic Rosedale is on the remaining nine acres of former 127 acres of pasture and farm fields with the original and restored 1815 farmhouse and garden museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. The site is in the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Colonial Dames’ Great American Treasures. The collection features Treasure Trees - specimens recognized by TreesCharlotte due to significant age, size, rarity, or history, such as an enormous arborvitae from approximately 1815 and a flourishing swamp chestnut oak carried by here by horse and buggy from the east coast in 1894. Old roses include a huge Lady Banks species rose from the early 1920’s, noisettes, and Cecile Brunners as collected by Empress Josephine at Malmaison. Tours are offered most weekdays and alternate Saturdays except in January. There are educational workshops throughout the year and volunteer opportunities to learn about arboretum care.
