Nestled within the serene beauty of the 1,340-acre Amelia Island Plantation, our Juniper Court Arboretum is surrounded by maritime forests, tidal salt marshes, and pristine sandy beaches. Perched atop a natural sand dune between forest and marsh, this special area is more than just beautiful landscaping — it is a thriving wildlife habitat and an important part of the island ecosystem.
As a member of the Amelia Island Plantation Environmental Committee, they believe it is important to help both new and longtime residents understand the value of preserving their maritime forest canopy and native vegetation. Through educational tours and guided walks, residents can experience firsthand how the trees, shrubs, and under story plants support the delicate balance of coastal life.
Maritime forests are uniquely adapted to withstand strong winds, salt spray, and periodic flooding. These forests and estuaries provide critical habitat for countless species of wildlife. Raccoons, armadillos, opossums, butterflies, reptiles, and many bird species make their homes there. Visitors to the arboretum may spot great egrets, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, owls, and many migratory birds that travel through the area each year.
The marsh-side property also serves as a natural wildlife corridor, offering shelter, food, and safe passage for animals and birds alike. As part of Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, the community plays an important role in protecting Florida’s natural heritage.
