The Leonard J. Buck Garden is a 29 acre public garden with a naturalistic woodland design situated within a 600-foot wide gorge. Naturally formed rock outcroppings have been turned into extensive rock gardens and can be found throughout the landscape. It also encompasses a vast collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, spring ephemerals, alpine plants, and some tropical and nonhardy plants in container displays.
The Leonard J. Buck Garden, formerly named Allwood, began development in the 1940’s under Mr. Buck and Swiss landscape architect Zenon Schreiber. The garden changed hands in 1976 when it was entrusted to Somerset County Park Commission who now stewards and improves the land.
Many plants, including trees, bulbs, and perennials, are labeled for educational purposes. This unique property has over 580 woody plants accessioned, and many naturalized non-accessioned species. Among those, 210 trees/shrubs are labeled and visible to the public within the garden.
The garden is open year-round with free admission to visitors, and offers horticultural programs throughout the year.
