Longwood At Oakmont Arboretum
Longwood at Oakmont, part of Presbyterian SeniorCare Network, is a non-profit LifePlan Community. It is located near Pittsburgh and within a mile of the Allegheny River. Founded in 1992, the sixty-acre campus was formerly a golf course surrounded by wooded hillsides.
It now is home to a wide variety of deciduous and evergreen trees surrounding resident cottages, three apartment buildings, and attached one-story homes. They estimate that, scattered over their campus, there are more than 1,000 trees and at least 100 different species. Paved paths meander through the property, inviting residents and the public to stroll and enjoy the many shrubs, trees and—in season—flowering plants.
A highlight of the property is the Memorial Garden with its welcoming gazebo and collection of about 50 plants and trees. Established in 1999, the Garden Committee continues to develop and extend the collection, which includes both deciduous and evergreen trees, such as pines, spruce, dogwoods, black gum, katsura, flowering cherries, and blue holly, and perennial plants including hellebores, iris, daisies, and peonies.
The Longwood at Oakmont Arboretum is sponsored by the campus Environmental Concerns Committee. It is open to the public and is handicapped-accessible.
