Memorial Park & Greenlawn Cemeteries Arboretum is a peaceful setting of 153 acres with over 1,100 trees. It boasts eight Greater Kansas City Champion Trees. The highlight of the champions is the Cemeteries’ White Oak with a diameter of 51 inches and a beautiful crown spread. There is also a large collection of over 150 Black Walnuts. Since many of the trees are mature, the ecosystem benefits of the tree population are substantial. Among other benefits, it’s estimated through i-Tree that the carbon sequestration is over 31 tons and the avoided rainwater runoff is over 411,00 gallons per year. It’s also worth noting that the Cemeteries are part of multiple, Cemetery-owned parcels which are located immediately south of and contiguous to Kansas City’s Swope Park and immediately east of Jackson County’s Blue River Parkway and the Hillcrest Country Club and golf course. As such, the cemetery land is an important ecosystem link within the Brush Creek Sub-Watershed of the Blue River.
