The Newport Mansions Arboretum
The Newport Mansions Arboretum encompasses 88 acres of landscapes among 11 historic properties owned and maintained by The Preservation Society of Newport County. Through their properties, they protect, preserve and present nearly three centuries of America’s architectural, decorative arts, social and landscape heritage—from the Nicholas-Wanton-Hunter House (1748) to the opulent summer “cottages” of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House. Our arboretum includes a unique topiary garden, an elaborate Chinese teahouse, a public park and landscapes designed by Ernest Bowditch, Jacques Greber and the Olmsted Bros. The unifying element across this cross-section of American landscape design history is an outstanding collection of specimen trees. The mild climate and rich soil of Aquidneck Island, which has been called ‘the Eden of America,’ produces champion trees beyond compare.
