Oakwood Cemetery Arboretum is located in central, rural Wisconsin in Berlin, Wisconsin. It was established around 1850 as Berlin’s first cemetery and is city-owned and operated. The cemetery and arboretum sit on 54.1 acres of hill-swept land on the east edge of the city. Past the entrance gates you are welcomed by an historic, stately 1920’s Gothic Tudor Chapel, that has been well preserved, and at night you will note the architectural lighting that highlights this building’s historic, impressive features.
As you wind your way through the cemetery, you will see many mature trees, some likely even predating the cemetery itself, including many oaks, maples, honeylocust, basswood, catalpa and yew. Diversification of tree species continues to expand their collection and includes the addition of species like elm, ginkgo, beech, eastern redbud, tamarack and Kentucky coffee tree This beautiful property is home to various wildlife, including whitetail deer, and turkey to name a few.
A self-guided walking tree tour is available during operating hours. A brochure with a map is located in the kiosk on the east, back side of the chapel. All are welcome and there is no cost. Oakwood Cemetery is open daily from 8 AM until dusk, except for the winter months, during which the sexton will open the gates as weather permits.
