Pasadena Hills

Pasadena Hills, Missouri is a Tree City of approximately 900 people on 140 acres of rolling hills about a mile northwest of the City of St. Louis. The diverse community is known for its mature trees, Historic District status, and its range of architectural styles, including an impressive Gothic Revival entrance tower. Active garden clubs are complemented by the exuberance of the Youth Council in a variety of beautification projects. The Board of Trustees is actively involved with Beyond Housing and the Normandy Public School District in improving the community at large as well as the canopy. Agroforestry endeavors are a special interest of the Youth Council, driving species selection for those plantings that will add complexity and benefit both human and wildlife nutrition.

The existing canopy is currently dominated by many sweet gum and red oak trees reaching the climax of their maturity. New plantings are far more diverse, with an emphasis on native trees that have fewer problems with invasive pests and diseases, such as short leaf pine. The Beyond Housing arborists and foresters from the Missouri Department of Conservation are invaluable in providing expertise and resources to aid us in maintaining our canopy.

The May 12th, 2025 tornado that swept through the St. Louis area devastated many trees, and their loss renewed the collective awareness of the importance of trees. Attaining Level I arboretum accreditation from ArbNet is one way Pasadena Hills can advocate for the usefulness, beauty and importance of trees in our neighborhood.

Community participation and volunteerism is strong in Pasadena Hills, with numerous city-wide activities throughout the year, including landscape planting days and a fall landscape workday. Pasadena Hills takes pride in their degree of civic involvement, showing leadership in the small cities of north St. Louis County.
