Sanctuary Arboretum and Botanical Garden

Sanctuary Arboretum and Botanical Garden is located in Mascot, Tennessee about 15 miles northeast of downtown Knoxville. The property is home to a collection of over 400 accessioned woody plants representing around 200 species. They are open to the public for self-guided tours by appointment, and guided tours are available, at no charge, upon request. Visitors will find a pleasant environment where they can enjoy nature, feel free to be themselves, and discover a wide range of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants.

The arboretum and garden began in 2004 with the purchase of just under twenty five acres of neglected farmland. After clearing brush and debris and completing some grading work, planting began in 2006. More plants and trees have been added every year since then. The goal is to develop the collection to represent a wide range of the trees, shrubs, vines, and herbaceous plants capable of being successfully grown in the climate and conditions found at the garden. In 2025 they became officially certified by the State of Tennessee’s arboretum certification program and by the ArbNet program, which they hope will help them reach a broader audience and help to guide their future development.
