Squam Lakes Association Community Arboretum

The Squam Lakes Association is a public nonprofit dedicated to conserving the natural beauty, peaceful character, and resources of the Squam Lakes watershed for public benefit. The arboretum was created on their roughly 4-acre property and has over 100 trees and 28 unique labeled species. The property is nestled in the heart of the Lakes region of New Hampshire and is one of the only publicly accessible points on Squam Lake. To increase access, they have created a self-guided plant walk that takes you around the campus to each of the 28 labeled tree species.

Visitors will see three major collections: the edible species collection, indigenous name collection, and native species collection. The edible collection consists of 30 trees, 25 of which were planted in late September 2025 with the help of ReTreeUS. They acknowledge that the arboretum is planted on native land and once belonged to the Algonquin peoples of Abenaki and Penobscot, who they thank for nurturing and caring for the land. To honor this history, they have added indigenous names to all of the trees that have preceded them. These names are in the original Algonquin language and can be seen on each tree’s sign. All of our trees are native or naturalized to the area.
