Yampa River Botanic Park

The Yampa River Botanic Park is a six-acre public garden located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, at an elevation of approximately 6,800 feet. Accredited as a Level I arboretum through the ArbNet Accreditation Program, the Botanic Park is home to a diverse collection of trees that demonstrate resilience in a high-altitude, cold-climate environment. The arboretum includes nearly 200 evergreen coniferous trees representing 16 species and approximately 300 deciduous trees representing 20 species. Native and regionally adapted trees form the backbone of the collection.

Growing conditions at the Park are notably challenging. Winter temperatures can reach minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, heavy snow loads affect both young and mature trees, and low humidity at high elevation increases evaporation while also exposing trees to higher levels of ultraviolet light. Annual precipitation averages just 27 inches, and much of this moisture is lost before it can be fully utilized by trees. Despite these conditions, the Park’s tree collections thrive through thoughtful species selection and stewardship. Prominent evergreen species include Colorado blue spruce, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, bristlecone pine, Douglas fir, and subalpine fir. Deciduous trees include quaking aspen, narrowleaf cottonwood, water birch, chokecherry, and crabapples.
