Description:

Situated in the heart of the Eastern Shore, The Salisbury University Arboretum holds some of the most horticulturally diverse grounds in the local region.  A vision for the campus’ landscape to cultivate educational and aesthetic significance began in the 1920’s when the institution was founded, celebrated its first Arbor Day, and planted Holloway Hall’s notable Linden trees.  Since then, the arboretum has become the area’s unique and ideal setting for the scientific study and public display of carefully selected woody and herbaceous plants to include native, rare, and unusual specimens and collections.

The living plant collections include over 2700 accessioned and mapped trees and an extensive inventory of individual woody plants, which are showcased in carefully designed garden spaces, themed gardens and landscape settings throughout the 200 acre campus.  The arboretum features collections of maples, redbuds, crape myrtles, cypresses, magnolias, deciduous azaleas, witch hazels, rhododendrons, vines, hellebores, as well as Maryland State Champion Trees, and native and pollinator plants.

The University’s educational programs, tours, and community events assist with highlighting and interpreting the arboretum’s dedication to the biological and geographical sciences and environmental sustainability.

Description:

Coker Arboretum is at the center of one of the most beautiful university campuses in the nation: the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Managed by the North Carolina Botanical Garden, it is one of the Garden's oldest tracts.

In 1903, Dr. William Chambers Coker, the University's first Professor of Botany and the first chair of the University Buildings and Grounds Committee, began developing a five-acre boggy pasture into an outdoor University classroom for the study of trees, shrubs, and vines native to North Carolina. Beginning in the 1920s and continuing through the 1940s, Dr. Coker added many East Asian trees and shrubs. These species, closely related counterparts to many North Carolina native plants, enhanced the beauty and educational value of the Arboretum. Today the collection consists of a wide variety of plantings including flowering trees and shrubs as well as bulb and perennial displays. The Arboretum has something unique to offer during every season of the year.

Description:

Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum is one of the true gems of the Greater Cincinnati region. The forward-thinking founders established the groundwork for a landscape that continues to flourish, providing the community with not only a serene final resting place for their loved ones, but also an exceptional outdoor educational facility. The founding fathers of the cemetery and arboretum, who were members of the Cincinnati Horticulture Society, possessed a strong desire to develop a landscape in the Romantic English style, with rolling hills and picturesque views. Robert Buchanan, the driving force behind the Horticulture Society and the creation of the rural cemetery, insisted that the new cemetery be built on a site with "gentle elevation" and "interspersed with ravines that afforded a charming variety". The proper site was purchased (750 acres), and Spring Grove Cemetery was established in 1845.

Description:

Haverford College was founded in 1833 by a group of Quakers who promptly hired the English gardener William Carvill to design a landscape and transform the tilled fields and farm pastures into a "Great Lawn" around the school building. Drawing from the informal English landscape tradition, Carvill created open views with groups of trees in circles and allées, and a serpentine walk of shrubbery as well as garden plots for students to experience nature firsthand. Carvill's existing landscape drawing confirms Haverford as the oldest planned college landscape in the country, according to historian Thomas Schlereth of Notre Dame University.
Today, the 216-acre college is surrounded by the older established suburbs of Philadelphia, but the arboretum's commitment to campus beautification and preservation, as well as education, continues. It is open every day of the year to the public without charge. The center campus of labeled trees is surrounded by woods, a 2.2-mile nature trail, duck pond, and an 18-acre Pinetum started in 1929 by college faculty and alums concerned with preserving Haverford's natural setting and historic trees.
