South Africa is notably considered as one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world due to its species diversity, rate of endemism and diverse ecosystems. South Africa is home to more than 22 000 indigenous seed plants from almost 230 different families. It is also the proud home of 10% of the world’s flowering species, making it a major contributor to the global ecological scene.
They also have more than 1 700 indigenous species of trees and shrubs, some of which are threatened because of their rarity as well as the pressure of commercial and subsistence use. Fields College is dedicated to improving the understanding of different tree species, urban forest management and applying new knowledge in an arboretum to advance the protection of our rich indigenous tree heritage in the community and the public. Public participation programs will be established to promote and support the mission and goals of the arboretum.
The Fields College Arboretum is primarily devoted to showcase the variety of the rich indigenous tree species in South Africa. The labelled specimens offer a glimpse of the diversity of indigenous tree in South Africa, facilitating the exchange of knowledge.
It provides a tranquil space for the learners and the public to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty and serenity of this green area situated in the buffer zone of the Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve.
