John Houston Mifflin Arboretum at Mount Bethel Cemetery

Description

The John Houston Mifflin Arboretum at Mount Bethel Cemetery is nestled within 11 acres located in the heart of Columbia, Pennsylvania. Founded circa 1730, Mount Bethel Cemetery holds the distinction of being Lancaster County's oldest continually operating burial ground. It evolved from several smaller burial grounds, including "Old Bethel” (now, the section holding most of the town’s founders) and those associated with various religious congregations.

Throughout its history, Mount Bethel Cemetery has faced challenges, including financial hardship and periods of neglect. However, in recent decades, a dedicated group of volunteers has undertaken the crucial task of restoring and maintaining this historic site, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

In this new chapter, they are excited to further their community engagement with a special focus on preserving and enhancing the existing tree collection, increasing diversity through the introduction of new species while maintaining the cemetery's character, providing educational opportunities through signage, tours, and programs, improving the overall aesthetic appeal of the cemetery grounds, and promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
