Juhan-Moore Arboretum

Description

The Juhan-Moore Arboretum is a part of the Juhan-Moore Place, a 265 historic farmstead lying in the Ninth District, Land Lots 11 and 14, in Jones County, Georgia.  The Juhan-Moore Farm is unique because the native, historic landscape is largely intact, unaltered by modern activities, and is a microcosm of farming activities in the Lower Piedmont Region of Georgia with continuous ownership by a single family since the original land grant in 1807.

The arboretum preserves a Middle Georgia historic landscape of native trees, primarily hardwoods, in the hardwood bottoms (“hardwood drains”) which consist of around 140± acres, and legacy farm fields of around 120± acres.  Moore Creek originates on the property and eventually empties into Wolf Creek.  There also are numerous “wet weather” springs on the property which are active in the wet season (typically, the Fall and Winter), but disappear in dry season (typically, the Spring and Summer).

The protected Arboretum lies almost exclusively in the hardwood drains and around the perimeters of the old fields.  These hardwood drains are interspersed with hilltops where farming activities have occurred for over two hundred years.  The hardwood drains are typified by gradual slope of the hills down to the drains, with the slope becoming much steeper toward the bottom of the drain.  The flora changes dramatically from the top of the hardwood drain toward the bottom of the drain.
