Newton Cemetery Corporation
Newton Cemetery was founded in 1855 during the “rural garden cemetery” movement which strove to create park like cemeteries where the public could escape the city and enjoy nature. The continuous development of new interment space offers an opportunity to introduce a diverse selection of plant material into the natural landscape of the cemetery. The most recent expansion, completed in 2014, introduced two hundred fifteen trees and more than one thousand six hundred shrubs to the Arboretum.
The 100 tranquil acres are located in the geographic center of Newton, Massachusetts and serve as the final resting place for more than 40,000 individuals. Still an active burial place, Newton Cemetery serves the needs of all faiths for Newton and the surrounding communities. The grounds are open daily and the public is welcome to visit.
