The arboretum of the Sint-Pietersinstituut in Turnhout (Belgium) is an educational green space that combines biodiversity, heritage, and learning. Only two years ago, the schoolyard—with its already notable collection of trees—was still largely a grey playground area. Since then, it has been transformed into a vibrant and biodiverse landscape. While the physical redesign and planting were carried out by professionals, students and teachers were deeply involved in the planning process, ensuring the arboretum reflects the school community’s vision for a greener and more inspiring environment.
A true eyecatcher is the monumental Quercus palustris, which immediately draws attention when entering the playground. In addition, several local apple and pear varieties highlight the region’s horticultural traditions and providing students with a direct link between trees, food, and cultural heritage.
Special attention is given to linking the arboretum to environmental education. Students actively participate in documenting and learning from the collection, and the arboretum serves as both a sanctuary for trees and a source of inspiration for future generations. Plantsoon Smart Plant Labels provide digital access to information, allowing students, teachers and visitors to discover the story behind each tree and its contribution to the broader ecosystem.
